What is aesthetic surgery?

‘Cosmetic surgery, also known as aesthetic surgery, is where a person chooses to have an operation, or invasive medical procedure, to change their physical appearance for aesthetic reasons. Aesthetic surgery can provide profound health benefits to patients - both physically and for their psychosocial wellbeing. This has been evidenced in multiple scientific studies.

Most aesthetic surgery combines a “functional” and aesthetic component, even in situations where there is no functional change, the impact on a patient’s psychological situation can be life changing. ‘ (As defined by the Royal College of Surgeons of England)

Aesthetic or cosmetic surgery focuses exclusively on aesthetic procedures. This differs from plastic surgery, which involves a broad scope of procedures to restore the body’s normal appearance and function. Cosmetic surgery includes surgical procedures intended to enhance the appearance, whether by adjusting the proportions of the face or body, augmenting certain features, or improving symmetry.Cosmetic procedures are elective, meaning that patients decide to undergo these procedures on areas of the body that do not require an improvement in function. (As defined by the American Board of Facial Cosmetic surgery)
